Pink opal crystals are opals formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. They are amorphous stones, meaning they aren't made up of a crystalline structure. Opals are generally formed in sedimentary rocks such as sandstones and mudstones. As these sedimentary rocks are highly weathered, the weathering process releases silica into the groundwater, which then moves through small faults and joints in the rocks becoming trapped. Over time, the silica-rich groundwater hardens into a gel material and forms opals in the veins.
