Science:
Obsidian is also known as 'volcanic glass' as it is an extrusive igneous rock that forms when lava erupts onto the surface of the Earth from a volcano. Black obsidian is different to most other igneous rocks due to it's glassy appearance, and the fact that it doesn't contain crystals. As the lava cools and hardens so rapidly after being released from the volcano, it has no time to form crystals.
