Fluorite or fluorspar is a mineral with the chemical name, calcium fluoride, which consists of the elements calcium and fluorine. Fluorite crystals form when minerals such as fluorine in hot water are forced up through cracks in the Earth and deposit here, in felsic igneous rocks (volcanic rocks). Felsic is a term to describe light coloured igneous rocks, such as limestone. As limestone is made of calcium carbonate, the fluorine reacts with the calcium in the limestone to create calcium fluoride (fluorite).
