Agate crystals are a variety of quartz that form within the cavities of other rocks in acidic to neutral environments. Accumulation of silica-rich groundwater in rock cavities over thousands of years allow agate crystals to form, mostly within the voids of volcanic igneous rocks where it is hot and water can be help for long periods. As a result, the semiprecious stone forms layers or swirls over time, that are normally parallel to the surrounding cavity walls, giving 'lacy' agate its name.
